Why This Tour Covers Ground No Bus Tour Reaches
Bus tours to Zaanse Schans go north on the main road. This bike tour goes in the opposite direction — through the IJ River ferry crossing into Amsterdam North, where the city dissolves quickly into the kind of Dutch countryside that Monet painted. Aaron S. (May 2026): “From the bustling streets of Amsterdam around the palace and the train station to the wonderful amazingly close countryside that reminded my son and I of both Monet and van Gogh paintings. It was a wonderful ride on a beautiful sunny day.”

The guide Skip appears in the most reviews and generates the most enthusiasm. Kristin H. (May 2026): “First of all, sure hope you can get Skip as a guide! He was very knowledgeable, funny, and kept everyone safe.” Elisa B. (May 2026): “Skip gave us lots of history and interesting facts while keeping the whole biking group safe and taking us outside the city into the country to see a working farm and some adorable sheep.” Ian is praised by August T. as “knowledgeable having been born and raised in Amsterdam.” Ron and Eloise also praised.
The tour crosses from urban to rural in a way that’s impossible to convey from a bus window: you ride past the Central Station, through the Jordaan, onto the IJ ferry (free, included), and within 20 minutes of the ferry crossing you’re in open polder landscape with nothing but canals, farmhouses, and sheep.
Be Honest With Yourself: Who This Tour Is For
Melanie P. (May 2026, 3-star) writes the most useful caveat: “If you are someone who has not been on a bike in many years, even if you are fairly active, this tour is not for you. It is not an easy-going stroll through the countryside with lots of stops where you have a chance to take cute photos like the advertising shows. You end up biking over 13 miles, half of which is still in the city and can be a bit stressful with a big group trying to get through short green lights and dodging other cyclists.”
Diana B. (May 2026): “Within the city of Amsterdam it is very dangerous for older people to ride a bike. The cyclists in the city are way too fast and traffic is awful and chaotic.” Emily B. (May 2026): “At times we had to cycle very slowly to accommodate all those in the group as there is no lower limit on cycling ability. In the first hour we only made it 4km.”
The e-bike has a minimum height requirement of 5’5″ (165 cm) that is not posted on the Viator listing — Sharon B. and Pamx3 both discovered this at the tour. Riders under this height must use the standard bike, which led the group at a different pace.
This tour is a good fit if: you’re comfortable on a bike in city traffic, you can sustain 13 miles comfortably, and you want to see Amsterdam North from the saddle. It’s not a good fit if: you haven’t biked recently, you have mobility considerations, or you want a leisurely pace with extensive sightseeing stops.
The Route
Amsterdam City — Jordaan and Centraal Area
The tour begins with a ride through Amsterdam’s historic center — past the Central Station, through the Jordaan neighborhood, and to the IJ River. City cycling requires attention but the guide manages the group through intersections.

IJ Ferry and Amsterdam North
A free ferry crossing of the IJ River — the waterway that has been Amsterdam’s commercial lifeline since the 13th century. Amsterdam North was historically farmland; the guide covers the neighborhood’s evolution.
Noorderpark and Krijtmolen d’Admiraal
A ride through Noorderpark and a stop at Krijtmolen d’Admiraal — a chalk windmill from 1792 that ground shells and limestone for building materials and paint. A rare working example of a chalk mill in Amsterdam.
Dikhoeve Cheese Farm — 30 Minutes
A working farm with cows, sheep, and lambs. Two types of fresh cheese — sheep and cow — served with drinks. The cheese is made on site. Some reviewers found the farm stop slightly awkward (no formal greeting — Edie F.), but most describe the cheese and animal contact as highlights. Baby lambs available to pet in season.
Ransdorp and Waterland — Polder Countryside
The village of Ransdorp — a cluster of traditional Dutch buildings around a historic church tower — and a ride through the Waterland polder landscape: dead-flat, canal-crossed, and genuinely rural within 20 minutes of central Amsterdam. Nieuwendammerdijk: a historic dike road lined with traditional Dutch houses.
IJ Ferry Return

So glad we opted for the ride outside of the city. Eloise was a fantastic guide! The scenery was gorgeous and the cheese at the farm was so delicious. Lots of great historical information was shared and we also got a little exercise. We highly recommend this tour and would definitely do it again.

If you are someone who has not been on a bike in many years, this tour is not for you. It is not an easy-going stroll through the countryside like the advertising shows. You end up biking over 13 miles, half of which is still in the city and can be a bit stressful. At the beginning the guide stopped frequently to let everyone catch up, but after my friend and I fell behind, I lost sight of the group. I would only recommend this tour if you are an avid cyclist.
