Combining the Netherlands’ Two Star Attractions
Keukenhof and Zaanse Schans are the two experiences that most first-time Netherlands visitors name as their priorities โ and they’re in opposite directions from Amsterdam. Keukenhof is southwest of the city near Lisse; Zaanse Schans is north. Doing both independently requires a full day of logistics. This tour eliminates the planning.

Lisa P. (May 2026) is an avid gardener who describes Keukenhof in detail: “BUT the highlight for us was touring the Keukenhof Gardens!! The gardens were everything we had read about and more. Yes, it was the end of the ‘season’ and the fields had been dead-headed, but the staff had it looking like it could’ve been Day One with color-color-color everywhere! The creativity of the designers in the various pavilions, and the phenomenal work of the 30 gardeners employed to create this masterpiece were beyond impressive.”
Kate H. (March 2026, solo female traveler): “This experience was everything that I was looking for: the tulips, the windmills, the cheese, a canal tour. We had three full hours at the garden and windmill village each. I had added on the canal cruise. It was a full day and the perfect experience.”
The guide Diana is the standout name in recent reviews: Donna P. (May 2026) calls her “the best tour guide I’ve met.” Cynthia P. (May 2026): “Our tour guide was fantastic โ she was organized, kind, efficient and funny.” Paul and Rick also praised. Na G. (May 2026, 3-star) had a different experience and described the tour as bus commentary rather than active guided tours at each location โ this may depend on the specific guide and departure.
Keukenhof: What to Know Before You Go
The Season
Keukenhof is open only from mid-March to mid-May. Outside this window, this tour does not operate. Peak tulip bloom is typically mid-April, but varies by 2-3 weeks depending on winter temperatures. The operator cannot guarantee peak bloom on any specific date โ flower timing is controlled by nature. Several May reviewers note the outdoor tulip fields had been harvested by the time of their visit, though the gardens inside the park remained spectacular.

The Scale
32 hectares. 7 million bulbs. 15 kilometers of walking paths. The park is divided into themed gardens โ themed by color, by country, by designer. Indoor pavilions display orchids, lilies, and other spring flowers independent of outdoor conditions. There is a playground for children and multiple cafรฉs and picnic areas. The park is cash-free โ only card payments accepted.
3.5 Hours at the Park
Three and a half hours is enough to cover the highlights and the main pavilions at a comfortable pace. It is not enough to walk every path โ the park is large. Kate H. would have liked an extra hour; some May reviewers found it slightly too long. The skip-the-line ticket means you go straight in.
Zaanse Schans: 2.5 Hours
After Keukenhof, the tour continues to Zaanse Schans for 2.5 hours covering the clog workshop, the cheese farm, and free time to explore the windmill village. The windmill entry (approximately โฌ7.50) is included. Gregory N. (May 2026) notes the clog and cheese demonstrations feel rushed in the context of a 9-hour tour โ the individual demo time is short. The windmill free exploration time is the better-developed portion.
- Live commentary on board by multilingual guide
- Air-conditioned vehicle
- Skip-the-line ticket for Keukenhof Gardens
- Dutch cheese tasting at Catharina Hoeve Farm
- Live wooden shoe-making demonstration
- Entry to a windmill at Zaanse Schans (~โฌ7.50 included)
- Optional 1-hour Amsterdam canal cruise ticket (if selected)
โ ๏ธ Season: Keukenhof is open mid-March to mid-May only. โ ๏ธ Tulip timing: Peak bloom varies by year and weather โ fields may be harvested by late May. The park interior gardens remain spectacular regardless. Keukenhof is cash-free โ bring a card. Meeting point: Stationsplein 4, white Stromma building โ 1-min walk from Amsterdam Centraal, city-side exit. Maximum 88 travelers. Not wheelchair accessible. Infants on laps. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

I’m a solo female traveler from the US. This experience was everything that I was looking for: the tulips, the windmills, the cheese, a canal tour. We had three full hours at the garden and windmill village each. I had added on the canal cruise. It was a full day and the perfect experience. There was a great mix of solo travelers, couples, and families. Highly recommend.

Diana was very informative, gave great recommendations, and is the best tour guide I’ve met. Tom was a very competent bus driver. It was a wonderful tour. The flowers, cheese class and tasting, the wooden shoe construction demonstration, the windmills and food were all wonderful.

Touring the Keukenhof Gardens was just a treat! The gardens were everything we had read about and more. The staff had it looking like it could’ve been Day One with color everywhere! The creativity of the designers in the various pavilions was beyond impressive. Yolanda and Daniel were the perfect team to get us from place to place safely.

It was very good but just about 1 hour too long at the gardens. Otherwise very good. The bus driver and tour guide were both very knowledgeable.
โญโญโญ Gregory N, traveler โ May 2026
The clog demonstration and cheese tasting felt rushed โ as if we were just another tourist group being herded into a demonstration and then dumped into a gift shop. The cheese tasting wasn’t a tasting at all โ it was a short demonstration followed by a number of samples. The explanation made it sound like an actual farm. It was not.
