Four Destinations, One Bus, Back by Mid-Afternoon
This tour is specifically designed to cover all four of Amsterdam’s most iconic countryside stops in a single morning — and return you to the city by mid-afternoon so you don’t lose the day. The operator is explicit: “This tour is designed to give you a panoramic overview of the Dutch countryside without spending the whole day away from Amsterdam. We leave early, and the total duration is 6.5 hours. It’s a fast-paced itinerary, created to help you see several highlights in half a day.”

Anissa (June 2026): “Ilya and Lara were enthusiastic and historical and culturally informative guides! A great way to see the Dutch lifestyle and world-famous cheese and shoe production + lunch at the coast and a water ferry home.” Rhonda (June 2026): “Even though it rained most of the day, we still had a blast. We LOVED seeing the windmills up close and the quaint towns where we stopped. Rob and Tony gave us a bunch of interesting history and information on how the Dutch manage their water situation. Great trip!!”
The guide team is large and praised extensively: Augustin, Xavier, Amanda, Rob, Tony, Beatrix, Karl, Pia, Ilya, Lara — all praised in recent reviews. Beatrix (Craig, June 2026): “Was a great guide full of information and humor. We really enjoyed all the sights especially the windmill making paint.”
One honest planning note: Craig (June 2026) suggests that if you had to cut one stop, Marken and Volendam are similar enough that dropping Marken and giving 90 minutes in Volendam would feel less rushed. He felt 35 minutes for lunch in Volendam was tight. This is a legitimate trade-off — the pace is brisk by design.
What Each Stop Includes
Zaanse Schans — Working Windmill Village (Free Time)
The most photographed village in the Netherlands — a collection of operational 18th and 19th-century windmills, green-painted wooden houses, and artisan workshops on the banks of the Zaan River. Free time to explore on your own: walk the windmill paths, visit the small museums, watch the craftspeople, and take photos of the most iconic Dutch landscape. One of the windmills produces paint pigments — visitors can watch the grinding process and climb the platform.
Edam — Medieval Cheese Town (Guided Tour)
The birthplace of Edam cheese — a medieval town of cobblestone streets, historic canals, and a central square where the original Edam Cheese Market once operated weekly. The guided tour covers the town’s history and architecture. Edam is quieter and less commercial than Volendam — a more authentic experience of a working Dutch town.
Simonehoeve Cheese Farm + Clog Workshop
A live demonstration of traditional cheese-making for Gouda and Edam at a family-run farm — not a display in a tourist shop. The process includes curdling, pressing, and the brining that gives Dutch cheese its distinctive rind. At the adjacent clog workshop, craftspeople carve and paint wooden shoes by hand. Both demonstrations include time to taste and purchase.

Volendam — Fishing Harbor (Free Time)
The most colorful fishing harbor in the Netherlands — traditional Dutch painted houses along the waterfront, a vibrant promenade, and street food stalls selling herring and kibbeling (battered fish). 35-45 minutes of free time. Try raw herring the Dutch way: held by the tail, tilted back. Or kibbeling with garlic sauce. Browse souvenir shops or simply sit at a harbor café.
Marken — Island Village (Guided Tour)
A former island (now connected by causeway) that maintained its isolation for centuries and preserved its distinct wooden house architecture, striped painted shutters, and Protestant church. The guided tour covers the village’s unique history and its resistance to outside influence. Note: Marken may be substituted in bad weather for safety reasons.
- Spanish or English-speaking guide (depending on option selected)
- Transportation by bus — private bus, luggage stays on board
- Entrance to Simonehoeve cheese farm + cheese tasting
- Entrance to clog workshop
- Optional: Amsterdam canal cruise upgrade available at booking
Not included: Food and beverages (budget for lunch in Volendam). ⚠️ Pace: This is a fast-paced tour — 35 minutes in Volendam is enough for a quick bite but not a leisurely lunch. ⚠️ Marken: May be substituted in bad weather. Meeting point: De Ruijterkade 151-153, near Aloha Bowling — look for blue umbrellas with the “Amsterdam Guides & Tours” logo. Arrive 15 minutes early — bus leaves on time, no exceptions. Babies need their own Maxi-Cosi. No pets. Not wheelchair accessible. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Anissa, United States — June 2026
Ilya and Lara were enthusiastic and historical and culturally informative guides! A great way to see the Dutch lifestyle and world-famous cheese and shoe production + lunch at the coast and a water ferry home.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Craig, United States — June 2026
Fantastic day — Beatrix was a great guide full of information and humor. We really enjoyed all the sights especially the windmill making paint. Well worth the admission price! Edam and the cheese factory was fun! If I were to do it again, I’d recommend dropping Marken and expanding time in Volendam to 90 minutes to allow for a restful lunch at a café. We felt rushed to get food in 35 minutes. The two towns are similar enough. Overall very high value!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tracy, Canada — June 2026
Great day out of the city with lots of information and history of the area. Xavier was a great tour guide and had helpful tips for Amsterdam as well.
