Zaanse Schans with a Guide Who Lives There: Small-Group of 16, All Admission Included
Zaan Tours’ Zaanse Schans windmill small-group tour stands apart from competitors in one key way: the guides are locals — and one of them, Sharon, actually lives at Zaanse Schans. That personal connection translates into a more intimate experience than the windmill village’s crowded standard visits allow. 3.5 hours covering the Kooijman Clog Workshop, Molen De Kat paint windmill (with platform climb), and Catharina Hoeve Cheese Farm. All admission fees included. Maximum 16 travelers. 4.7/5 based on 2,622 reviews. From $50.12 per person. Booked 10+ times in 12 hours. Free cancellation.

What ‘Guides Who Live There’ Actually Means
Most Zaanse Schans tours bring a guide who knows the site’s history. Zaan Tours brings guides who know the people who work there. Sharon, the most-mentioned guide in recent reviews, is a resident of Zaanse Schans — and multiple reviewers describe the difference this makes.
Kurt G. (June 2026): “You’ll get a better experience with a guide from this tour company. She knew all of the people that worked there giving us a little more of a personal experience as if we were meeting her friends. We felt as if we had special treatment compared to others when we went into any windmill, shop, etc. If you don’t mind getting a little wet, the groups are much smaller when it rains.” Lisa D. (June 2026): “Our tour guide Sharon was perfection — nice touch is that she actually lives here. Area out of a story book.” Sheila K. (May 2026, guide Toos): “With Toos as a guide you get all the inside information as it is her home.”
The guide list is strong and varied: Sharon, Bianca, Claudia, Kenny/Kenneth, Liselore, Caroline, Mikey, Santiago, David, Toos — all praised in recent reviews. Courtney B. (June 2026) adds a practical tip: “The location itself gets extremely busy, so book early in the morning to begin.”
Michele C. (June 2026): “I highly recommend this tour as an introduction to the city. The timeframe is perfect. Some competitor companies have longer tours, and I found the 3.5 hours to be the perfect amount of time.” The shorter format is intentional: 3.5 hours covers the essential Zaanse Schans experience without the padding that longer tours fill with bus travel to less-interesting stops.
What the 3.5 Hours Cover
Kooijman Souvenirs & Clogs Wooden Shoe Workshop (25 minutes)
A live demonstration of traditional clog carving — a craftsperson takes a block of poplar wood and shapes it into a functional Dutch shoe in minutes using specialized tools. The museum section displays clogs in every size, style, and painted design, including ceremonial clogs and miniatures. Free time after the demonstration to browse and purchase. Admission included.
Molen De Kat — Working Paint Mill (20 minutes)
Molen De Kat is a chalk mill from 1782 that ground chalk and other materials into paint pigments — the paints used to color Dutch Golden Age artworks were made in mills like this one. You enter the mill to see the grinding mechanisms and receive an information sheet in your language. Climbing to the platform gives panoramic views over the Zaan River, the other windmills, and the surrounding countryside. Admission included. Note: the climb is steep and narrow — not suitable for very young children or those with mobility issues.
Catharina Hoeve Cheese Farm (15 minutes)
A brief presentation on Dutch cheese-making followed by a tasting session with a wide variety of Gouda and aged cheeses from mild (young Gouda, 4 weeks) to sharp (aged 2 years). The difference in texture and flavor between young and aged Dutch cheese is significant and memorable. The cheese shop allows purchase of vacuum-packed wheels to take home. Admission included.

- Round-trip shared transfer from Amsterdam
- All admission fees — clog workshop, Molen De Kat windmill, Catharina Hoeve farm

Meeting point: LOT61 coffee shop near Amsterdam Centraal Station (part of DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal). Guide carries an orange umbrella. Book early morning — Zaanse Schans gets very crowded later in the day. Stroller accessible on the paths, but crowded — and the windmill climb is not possible with very young children. Not wheelchair accessible. Service animals allowed. Operates in all weather. Maximum 16 travelers. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sharon M, traveler — May 2026
Sharon was a terrific guide! We experienced several windmills and cheese making, and the Dutch shoe making. It was well worth the money. Thank you Sharon for a great trip!!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Courtney B, United States — June 2026
Our tour guide Sharon actually lives in Zaanse Schans! We wouldn’t have done this without a tour guide. She was great for navigation and so much knowledge. The transportation provided was perfect and the meeting place was very easy. The location gets extremely busy, so book early in the morning to begin.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Felisa L, traveler — May 2026
This is the perfect compact way to get a charming, curated perspective on life, located about 25 minutes outside urban Amsterdam. It’s a village that caters to tourists but you can learn about all those things typically associated with the Netherlands — clog-making, cheese, a pigment windmill, and chocolate. Also sheep, geese, and ducks. A pleasant, chill way to spend a sunny afternoon. Liselore was an excellent guide and did a great job herding our group of 14.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Kenneth B, United States — June 2026
Kenneth was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and gave us enough time to visit the shops. Very personable and would highly recommend him to anyone for that excursion. Wonderful experience.
